Independence Day Fireworks

July 5, 2010

We had a glorious Independence Day celebration — the parade, the food, the music, the old cars, the antique farm equipment, the games and magicians for the kids, and on and on. And, of course, the fireworks. These photos give you some idea. Thanks to Lora Gordon for letting us “borrow” them.

Shawsville Independence Day Celebration

June 28, 2010

The big Shawsville Independence Day celebration is July 3 this year.

Things begin with 5K race at 8 a.m. (Sign up at the Shawsville Middle School if you’re not already registered.)

The parade — featuring the World Famous Shawsville Ruritan Marching Kazoo Band — begins at 5:30 p.m. We’ll end up down at the old football field, where there will be food, music, games for the kids, old cars, a magician, and displays of all sorts from local non-profits and civic groups.  And, of course, we’ll have fireworks .

We generally have the best fireworks display in the New River Valley. This year’s is supposed to be biggest yet.

The Ruritans will also auction off all sorts of donated items — we’ve had everything from vacation packages to artwork to TVs and appliances. It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year, so you can get a good deal and help out some good causes.

And — for those of you who like the square dance — Fort Vause will be start playing right after the parade.

Y’all come!

Tom Angleberger, renowned juggler, newspaper columnist, and increasingly famous children’s author, will be calling the dances.

Square dance, Garden Day, and I don’t know what all

April 23, 2010

Saturday’s square dancing begins at 7 p.m. You can skip right to that if you want to, but Meadowbrook will be hopping long before then. (This may be the last dance of the season, so don’t miss it!)

(You may have seen our square dance caller on TV recently. His latest book, The Strange Case of  Origami Yoda, is getting a lot of attention. He’ll have a big book bash at the Meadowbrook library  Sunday afternoon.)

EastMont Garden Day,  sponsored by EastMont Garden Club, kicks off this season’s Shawsville Farmers Market at 9am It runs until 1pm in the Meadowbrook courtyard, just outside where we do the dancing. The garden club will be selling plants, and a bunch of Farmers Market vendors will be there:

Brush Creek Aquaponics
Sandy and Ralph Birkenmaier will have duck eggs (collect the whole set of ducky feathers!), handcrafted soaps and Soothing Milk Bath (for those achy muscles from working in the garden), greeting cards and book marks (with photos of their ducks, plants, and local scenes), and button badges. Come meet Rover the Duck. Visit their website at BrushCreekAqua.webs.com.

EastMont Massage Therapy
Ini Beckman from Eastmont Massage Therapy at Meadowbrook will be there with her massage chair. Go see her if you have a specific problem or none!

Five Fields Farm
Meredith and Steve will have 15 varieties of heirloom tomato plants, fresh rhubarb and eggs. They’ll also have a large selection of homemade jam with free samples, so be sure to stop by and try some!

Loria Hylton
Loria will have hand knit creations including dishcloths, scarves and toddler hats.

MaggieBeth’s
The Thorntons will have cookies, cookie mixes, Jezebel sauce, Squirrel Crunch (a snack mix for human beings, not our little bushy-tailed friends),  goat cheese spreads and gouda cheese.

Mount Pleasant Eggs
Jennifer will have organic, free range eggs for sale.

New River Gourmet
Melissa will have a vast selection of gourmet goodies, snack mixes, dried fruit and gift baskets.

It’s also the grand opening of the YMCA thrift store and the YMCA pottery studio and I expect the museum will be open, too.

Big day in Shaws Vegas.

Y’all come!
