About the Shawsville Ruritans
The Shawsville Ruritan Club serves Eastern Montgomery County, Virginia.
The club’s big event is the annual Fourth of July celebration at the old high school football field. It’s an old fashioned celebration that begins with a parade through town and ends with a fireworks display. In between there are games, activities and entertainment for the kids, music, old cars, antique farm equipment, food, raffles, an auction and all manner of entertainment. The features vary from year to year, but we’ve had a dunking booth, a croquet tournament, a helicopter, magicians, jugglers, bagpipers, pony rides and fire trucks. There’s a 5K, too.
The Fourth is the club’s big fundraiser. The club’s biggest single money using project is giving scholarships to graduates of Eastern Montgomery High School.
The Ruritans started their monthly square dances in 2008. They’re on the fourth Saturday of the month beginning this year in October and running until sometime next spring.
